I'm about to seriously date myself here, but do you remember when The Little Mermaid was first released in theaters? I remember my friend Kelly, who lived up the street from me, had the soundtrack. I remember jealously thinking how lucky she was. So you can imagine it was like fulfilling a childhood dream when I heard about this release and that I would be getting my very own copy. It's the little things in life, right?

And, as you might also imagine, I have a couple kids who love all things magical and Disney - with mermaids being absolutely no exception!

My first reaction when I opened the package was absolute awe over the gorgeous artwork. They include visual development art for the film, but also some new artwork by Lorelay Bove. No, it's not exactly what you see in the movies, but it's part of the Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection, and it's beautiful. This is a line that celebrates the anniversaries of Disney's most loved films. Did you know it's now been 25 years since The Little Mermaid was released? (Clearly, that must mean I'm a whopping 28 years old.)

The CD set includes the original soundtrack as well as work tapes and song demos performed by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken - the incredibly talented men who wrote and composed the soundtrack. I'm not sure if my kids care so much for that portion, but I totally enjoy the acoustic performances. I'm especially in love with the piano demo of The Storm score. And the set is book bound, which means it's actually a little hardcover book with high quality pages and illustrations. My husband even got caught up reading the liner notes - the process of how the music was created is such a great story!

And the first time I played the soundtrack in the car for my kids was perfect. I didn't announce it, I just put the CD in while we were on a long drive. As soon as the song "Part of Your World" started, N perked up and asked "Is that Ariel?" Now the whole family has been either singing or whistling all the songs ever since.

Maybe it's not the most realistic story that a 16 year old mermaid would fall in love at first sight with a prince on a ship, then grow legs in exchange for her voice, and then (eventually) live happily ever after, but isn't that the point? Disney films and Disney music have always encouraged us to let our imaginations get the best of us.

The entire Legacy Collection (including The Little Mermaid, Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, and more) is available through the Disney Music Emporium, but also on Amazon. And right now, I'm so excited to share with you the opportunity to WIN your very own Legacy Collection copy of The Little Mermaid! Just use the Rafflecopter form below. The Contest is open from now through the 14th (PST). Good luck!
