Valentine's: with love from Portland

Valentine's is just a few days away, and you don't have anything for that special someone. Or maybe that's just me? (Am I always a procrastinator? Don't answer that.)

Anyway, I have a few special ideas that might appeal to your loved one - if your loved one happens to love good food. Like me. Ahem...

Valentine's specials/ gift ideas from Portland vendors

First and foremost, if you're looking for great recommendations for places to go on Valentine's - you may have come to the wrong blog. I've said it before, and I'll say it again (and again, and again) - we need to get out more. I can tell you that if you're looking for a special place (read, fun and not run-of-the-mill either) to satiate your sweet tooth, you should definitely stop in at Salt & Straw for some amazing ice cream.

For Valentine's, Salt & Straw has even collaborated with some of Portland's best small-batch chocolatiers: Sahagun Chocolates, Xocolatl de David, Missionary Chocolates, Alma Chocolate and Woodblock Chocolate. I am seriously drooling over the pictures on their website. I want to go to there. Like, right now. Except I'm snowed in, sort of. Check out there website to find the location nearest you, and also to get a peak at which flavor you'll want to try first. I'll tell you right now, my absolute favorite is Grandma Malek's Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache. It might be a mouthful to order, but that ganache more than makes up for it.
And now for some actual gifts from local businesses that you can purchase ahead of time, and you don't need to live in the Portland area to take advantage of a lot of these!

For something really unique, but definitely tasty - Olympic Provisions is offering three and six stem Salami Bouquets. The bouquets are available for purchase in the online store. I might order this for my husband, actually...

I know a lot of people cook without aprons these days. My son always knew I was making something special (and predictably messy) when I'd get my apron out. That apron has long since worn out, but it couldn't hold a candle to the Broken Cleaver apron. Created by Chefs Adam and Jackie Sappington, the husband and wife duo behind The Country Cat, the apron is made of 65% cotton, and is light but sturdy. Hand sewn by the Portland Garment Factory, the Broken Cleaver is one-size-fits-all - equipped with an adjustable leather shoulder strap. The Broken Cleaver Apron is available for purchase online.

The Valentine's menu includes heart-shaped Paris-brest, custom conversation shortbread hearts, pure chocolate tart for two, classic red velvet cupcakes and double chocolate cupcakes. Please place orders for Valentine’s Day by Tuesday, February 11thSomeone let my husband know about this one.

Valentine's Day baskets are available from CruMarket. With all the delicious local products included, it's the a great way to send a loved one something special and tell them you care. What fun plans do you have for this Valentine's Day? I'll be getting another ultrasound the morning before, and I think that might be the extent of my Valentine's Day excitement. Maybe my husband will surprise me? Best to live life with hope, right?
