My Health Heroes

Who keeps you healthy? I think we all have different reasons for keeping healthy. Most people will tell you to do it for yourself. While that's great and all - when do you REALLY put yourself first for your own sake? Maybe it's just me, but I rarely (if ever) do.

The fact that I feel better, that I look better, and that I can feel better about myself - it's all just bonuses. I love that I am 1. setting a good example for my kids, and 2. allowing myself to be a better mom for my kids. It's not about being skinnier. Skinnier moms do not better moms make, right? But a healthier mom? A mom who can run and keep up with her kids? Who can provide healthy snacks and activities and participate in her kids lives? Yeah, that's a better mom.

I like that at 5 months pregnant, I was able to hike up a hill repeatedly pulling this little girl behind me on a sled.

And in 20 or 30 years, I want to be able to do the same thing (sans the pregnancy, right?) with my grandkids.

My kids encourage me to make cupcakes, cookies, and all kinds of ridiculous treats, but they inspire me to be healthy. Because of them, I want to get out for a run in the rain. I want to snack on fresh fruit instead of leftover birthday cake. I want to see them grow up. I want to be vital and active throughout their lives. I want to be a participant, and not just sitting on the sidelines.

I know my kids won't always want me running along side them - they don't always want me running along side them NOW - but I want to know, and I want them to know, that I'm capable. I want them to know that I can be there for them emotionally, mentally, and physically for as long as I have any say in the matter.

Who keeps you healthy? Do you have any "health heroes"? What keeps you motivated to make healthy decision? I'll admit, I have trouble turning down treats, but it's all in moderation, right? So long as I remember my ultimate values and goals, I'm able to keep my momentum moving forward toward good health and health habits. Do you feel the same way?

This post was inspired by the Who Keeps You Healthy campaign put together by American Recall Center. This was NOT a sponsored post. American Recall Center provides information on drug and medical equipment recalls as well as general health related information and support. They also provide a Community forum with the focus of facilitating conversations in all health related areas. This month's focus is on hip replacement awareness, but they've discussed topics ranging anywhere from the potential dangers of birth control pills to cholesterol awareness.
